Part 1: Grammar Focus – Narrative Tenses in Storytelling
When telling a story or describing past events in English, writers blend three main past tenses to build context and show the exact order of events.
1. Past Simple (Main Actions)
Used for completed actions that happened in a specific sequence in the past.
"Bilbo Baggins of Bag End announced that he would shortly be celebrating his eleventy-first birthday..."
2. Past Continuous (Background Actions)
Used for an ongoing action or scene in progress when another event happened.
"An old man was driving it all alone."
3. Past Perfect (The "Earlier" Past)
Used for an action that happened before another action or time in the past.
"The riches he had brought back from his travels had now become a local legend..."
Part 2: Short Reading Passage
Read the following short excerpt from Chapter 1 ("A Long-Expected Party") and notice how the author mixes past tenses:
"The next day more carts rolled up the Hill, and still more carts... Before long the invitations began pouring out, and the Hobbiton post-office was blocked, and the Bywater post-office was snowed under, and voluntary assistant postmen were called for."
